Maybe You Should Use Shower Curtains as Regular Curtains

A modest proposal.

In the past month I have come to a realization that has stopped me in my tracks, questioning everything I’ve ever known and pondering how I will go forward with this newfound knowledge: Shower curtains are way better than normal curtains.

Seriously! From Quiet Town’s whimsical neon-toned sun shower collection to the delightfully patterned options offered by Target’s Opalhouse, there are so many shower curtains on the market now that are far more exciting than the ones manufactured for windows only. So after much thought and introspection, I’ve come up with a modest proposal: You should totally use shower curtains like you would window curtains.

Sure, this requires some strategic planning. For a double-paneled look, you’re going to have to buy two shower curtains, and to keep things looking elevated, it’ll be worth investing in some pretty shower hooks—though this shouldn’t be too hard, as you can find plenty of luxe-looking brass options these days. You’ll also want to make sure that a typical shower curtain height (72 inches) works well with your window height.

All that considered, it’s time to pick the shower curtains that deserve to see more than just your bathroom. Time to think outside of the box (or, um, the loo).

For a boho bungalow

There’s nothing Laura Ashley about this bold floral print from Anthropologie. This vivid, summery curtain would make a perfect accent in a plant-filled bohemian room. If you pair it with some red or orange accents (a sofa, perhaps?), all the better.

For a rosy hue

Millennial pink may no longer be a buzz phrase, but blush is forever. The dreamy pink hue of this textured curtain is the perfect thing to warm up a cool-toned living room.

For a serene escape

Attention, minimalists: This simple striped linen curtain is the thing that summertime dreams are made of. When your windows are open and the breezes are blowing, you’ll feel like you’re in The Talented Mr. Ripley (uh, before it turns into a murder mystery).

For a graphic touch

The bold color-blocking on this curtain from Ferm Living makes for a playful option. Just imagine how great it would look set against a navy blue wall.

For unexpected flair

Who said stripes have to be boring? The lines on this Target shower curtain are slightly irregular, giving it a cool look that would feel right at home in a space with plenty of graphic ’80s influences.

For an electric feel

Pause a moment and just imagine how cool your room would look with light streaming through one of Quiet Town’s highlighter-yellow vinyl shower curtains. Add a disco ball, and your bedroom will become your new favorite club—in the best possible way, of course.
